Research: Interview Writing

2017 has been a new start for the rising pop artist, Olivia. She has started out travelling and believing in her dreams and is now here with us as a successful 17 year old answering some questions and telling us how her life is going so far

Q: How did you get started with music?
A: I started off when I was very young with the support from my family and friends. It started off as just hobby, I would pick up my guitar every once in awhile and would just let all my emotions out through the use of my words. Over time I realised I had a strong passion for music and wanted to pursue it further so I began to take music classes in school which includes staying after school for hours. My music teacher also pushed me whenever I had a bad day and helped me use music as a distraction or a get away. As I remember, words flew right out of my mouth, it all came together. It made me happy and I never gave up...

Q: Why pop?/How long have you been writing songs and performing cover songs?
A: As many teenagers do, I went through many phases with music. My love for music was courageous and I discovered lots of different genres I never thought existed. For example, when I was 13 I was into rock and electric but gradually got hooked into acoustic and pop therefore here I am today in love with pop. I was also greatly influenced by many artists and Bands.

Q: Who has inspired you throughout the years?
A: Well...many people have! My family, in particular my mum, has showed huge amount of support as she never gave up on me which has also made me motivate myself.

Q: Were you thrilled to hear that your new release was on the top 10 charts?
A: Obviously I was pleased and in joy as I remember going out to celebrate with my mates and received much love from my family. However, I’d say I wasn’t shocked as I know I’ve worked hard and deserved it. I’m already thinking of going further...above and beyond.

Q: What was the story behind your recent release?
A: As you might have realised, I like to correspond my style with my music on the whole. Sometimes I do dress a bit different depending on my environment but I do like to stick to what I feel comfortable in and like to almost impress myself really.

Q: I have heard you like to travel, what are your top places to visit?
A: Yes! Other than Music, travelling is another passion for me as I enjoy taking photographs for memories. I love to visit sentimental and historical cityscapes to get some inspiration as well as to just relax, taking in fresh air. My top places to visit would be Kyoto (Japan), New York (USA) and Barcelona (Spain).

Q: As you have previously mentioned you said you never gave up, what made you stay productive and motivated?
A: I’m an ordinary human being just like anyone else, I have struggled with many problems including stress and have fallen into depression not long ago. However, I have always picked myself back up as I know what I am capable of and the talent I can show to the world. Many people as mentioned previously have also helped me and I am so thankful for those people but the major key in my life right now would be to believe in yourself and never give up.

Q: Who would you collab with?
A: Ahh, that’s a tough one! Of the top of my head, I’ve always been a fan of Justin Bieber and can see how far he’s come from such a young age which inspires me to do the same. I’d like to work with someone who’s fun but knows when to be serious and down to business.

Q: Any upcoming music releases to look forward to?/Do your fans (your audience) have anything special to look forward to?
A: Well you’re going to have to keep your eyes out for that! What I can say is my future releases will be about my past as I feel my fans don’t know much about me and I would very much like them to know. I want my fan base to feel as though we are a family, as I love my supporters very much and is the least I could do for them.

Q: What’s your overall message for your music?
A: At the moment, I haven’t released much content therefore cannot put an overall message as of yet as each piece I make may have a different meaning and reason behind it. Nevertheless, I want my music to bring happiness and I’ll always try my best to put out a positive message. As a reminder to all those who look up to me, I am not a role model, I myself make mistakes and may be “rebellious” in certain circumstances but don’t take my lead. Be yourself and have fun.

This was my final and improved interview write up however did not have time to go back and improved little details however is still roughly the same in my final DPS. However, I have changed the purple writing to blue in order to match my feature colours as well as the blue working well with the DPS from the model's hair.

Focus group

1) What is your favourite genre and why?

Mahema: I don't have a favourite genre but I do usually listen to Bollywood as it makes me happy and if i'm stressed out it acts as a relief because they're uplifting songs, but I also listen to Pop & RnB because its catchy and makes me excited. These genres are good for long journey's because they get you in the mood.
Azurra: I like RnB because a lot of the lyrics have good meaning to the songs.
Maryam: Although I don't really listen to music that much, when I do I prefer to listen to pop and mainstream music. I find this genre of music to suit me best as I can listen to it whilst I work or just for fun. It's a good way to relax and just take your mind off things but also can motivate you and get you being productive.

2) What's the first thing that attracts your attention when you pick up a magazine?

Mahema: The person that's on the cover catches my attention because if i like the person on the front cover then I will pick the magazine up and look through.
Azurra: The model usually attracts me because of how most magazines often have the model staring directly at the audience.
Maryam: The images on the magazine usually attract me to pick it, If i like the celebrity or model I am usually more drawn to it as Mahema mentioned previously.

3) What do you like/dislike about the this 'Q' magazine?

Mahema: I like that if you look at all the magazines you'll be able to know that this is the 'Q' magazine because the layout of the magazine is the same all throughout the number of magazines they have. I also like how they position the artist/group on the magazine covers as it makes them look confident. I don't like Q magazine logo because I feel like the font for the letter Q doesn't match the image of the magazine, they should have a bolder font to fit the front covers.
Azurra: I like the magazine covers of 'Q' magazine because it is modern and links well with society.
Maryam:I think that in some of the covers the 'q' logo works well however sometimes i really dislike it. i like the different fonts they used. I like the use of the brightly coloured fonts.

4) What do you like/dislike about this 'NME' magazine?

Mahema: I like the font used on the front cover of the magazine because it links to the logo of the magazine and looks consistent throughout. I dislike the fact that the bar code is placed sideways on the front cover.
Azurra: I don't like the use of red as it connotes anger although could be used to emphasis excitement.
Maryam:I like the cover generally however I think that thy do use a lot of red ad white and it would be nice to see a use of more different colours. I like it when they use black and white images it makes it look much better as a cover.

5) Which magazine do you like best and why?

Mahema: I like NME magazine better because its bold and the colours used on the front cover compliment one another. Also I like that the positioning of the writing on the page isn't interrupted by the image.
Azurra: I like Q because it links to the new generation as well as being eye catching.
Maryam: I think I like the 'Q' magazine a little more out of the two. I like the use of the bold logo and the bright and colourful fonts that have more variety, in the NME magazine there isn't as much colour and variety.

Based on the overall views and opinions, I have hugely been influenced by what the 'focus group' have said such as how they would like the logo (not too simple) or how they'd prefer the bar code to be placed. Although these are little things to be thinking about they do make a huge impact on how the whole magazine looks overall. Mahema has also picked up on how the model should pose as the model is a huge feature that grabs the attention the quickest for many readers, Therefore, I will take the focus group's ideas and views into account to create a successful music magazine,

Music Magazine: Research (General)

Here I have used Survey Monkey in order to collect research however, I have decided to print this off and hand it out for feedback instead of doing it online.
I have included this as my first question to straight away get to know what music people like. I have also added the other option in case the audience prefers another music magazine or does not read music magazines at all. I have included a range of different magazine genre's keeping in mind that not everyone might love Pop, however I have included Billboard as an example of a Pop magazine.

I have thought about what a general magazine would have to offer such as the colour, font and model therefore thought about asking what grabs the attention first.

I then decided to think about what I might include in my front cover magazine therefore thought of asking what they audience would like to read about, helping me with my cover,

Once I printed it off for my audience to fill in I finally found out what everyone would like and many answers to the questions above.

Research: Pop Artists

Here I have chosen a few POP artists and have created a collage of them. This is so I can in time narrow down some POP artists and use them for inspiration for my music magazine.
Here I have chosen a few artists from above and have looked into their fashion such as there outfits. This is again for inspiration but must take into consideration that I can only do so much as I cannot afford to buy a funky dress for the front cover model. However, I can take certain things into account such as the balloon used to grab the audience's attention and which could also be used as an anchor. I have also looked into different hairstyles such as Katy Perry's hairstyle fazes. I will also look into different styles of makeup and create a POP inspired makeup look on my model.

History of Pop

Music Magazine: Research Rationale

To begin with, I have decided to target the youth, ages 16-19 for my research rationale. This is because I have have open access to them as well as seeing them on a daily basis (excluding weekends) therefore should take an advantage of this. This can help me with my research to get a sense of how everyone feel about music magazines in general as well as different tastes of what people love. This can help and benefit my music magazine which I am strongly convinced will now be the genre of Pop. As I conduct my research I am planning to get primary research through the use of surveys and interviews to help my understanding of what people like about music magazines or pop music in general.

I will also be selecting a few people to have a focus group for my audience research in order to present their views on Pop music. I will take their opinions into consideration to create a successful music magazine that everyone will enjoy. I will also look at different Pop magazines in order to get a glimpse of the house style. To research further into Pop I will look into what Pop magazines stores offer as well as what looks the most appealing/stand out the most.

All in all, I am looking forward to these tasks as I will have better understanding of the genre and what Pop has to offer.

Music Magazine: Magazine Deconstruction

All in all, I like the magazine 'Wonderland' as although it's minimal and simplistic the use of fonts are unique and funky, which brings a sense of character within the magazine.
I also like 'Q' magazine as the conventions all go together with a lot of detail.
I have chosen these two magazines to deconstruct as I feel they will help me when creating my own. As I was assigned with this task,  I feel as though I am much more lenient with the genre of Pop as I have come across many more ideas such as the use of props or choice of makeup.
